About Stadium Scoreboards

When selecting a scoreboard for your sports facility, understanding what options are available is crucial.

To help you make an informed decision, this guide offers an overview of various scoreboard sizes and types.

What Is A Stadium Scoreboard?

A stadium scoreboard is a display system that shows game information such as scores, time, and player statistics.

If you’re a long-time sports fan, you’ve likely seen the classic manual scoreboards that are changed by hand. Today, most scoreboards use LED technology to display graphics, animations, and video content.

What Is The Standard Size of a Stadium Scoreboard?

Here are some common dimensions for LED scoreboards.

Middle/High School Stadiums:

  • Typical Dimensions: 20′-24′ W x 8′-10′ H (6.1m-7.3m W x 2.4m-3m H)
  • These scoreboards are suitable for venues with a small to moderate number of spectators.

High School/College Stadiums:

  • Typical Dimensions: 24′-36′ W x 10′ H (7.3m-11m W x 3m H)
  • These scoreboards cater to venues with a moderate number of spectators.

College Stadiums:

  • Typical Dimensions: 20′-35′ W x 10′-50′ H (6m-10.7m W x 3m-15.2m H)
  • These scoreboards are suitable for a large number of spectators.

Professional Stadiums:

  • Typical Dimensions: 40′-70′ W x 60′-160′ H (12.2m-21.3m W x 18.3m-48.8m H)
  • These scoreboards are suitable for a very large number of spectators.

Giant Video Boards:

  • Typical Dimensions: 70′ W x 160′ H and larger (21.3m W x 48.8m H and larger)
  • These massive video boards are found in the largest venues, such as NFL stadiums and major sports arenas.

Fun Fact: What Is The Largest Scoreboard Ever?

The largest scoreboard ever built is the Oculus at SoFi Stadium, home to the Los Angeles Rams and Chargers. This massive double-sided video board measures 70,000 square feet, weighs approximately 2.2 million pounds, and is 120 yards long.

What Size Should Your Scoreboard Be?

Choosing a scoreboard requires careful consideration of multiple factors. For expert guidance, contact our team. We’ll discuss the best option for your needs.

We offer a comprehensive range of sports stadium displays, including scoreboards, perimeter displays, and LED screens. Our solutions are perfect for sports arenas and stadiums and can be tailored to meet your specific requirements.

General Rules to Follow When Selecting A Scoreboard Size

  1. Viewing distance and angles
  2. Facility dimensions
  3. Level of play (recreational, school, college, etc.)
  4. Digit height for readability
  5. Technology type (LED, traditional)
  6. Budget constraints
  7. Scalability for future expansion
  8. Multi-sport functionality (if applicable)
  9. Structural requirements
  10. Expert consultation for tailored recommendations

Factors That Determine Scoreboard Size

Viewing Angles

Vertical: The scoreboard must be large enough to allow comfortable viewing from the closest and farthest seats. A general rule is to keep the vertical viewing angle between 25 to 35 degrees.

Horizontal: Spectators should be able to view the entire scoreboard without turning their heads more than 30 to 40 degrees.

Distance to Farthest Seats: Text on the scoreboard should be legible from the farthest seats. This means for every 50 feet of viewing distance, the text height should increase by 1 inch.

Stadium Architecture

Seating Layout: Seating arrangements affect a scoreboard’s size. Multi-tier stadiums, for example, require larger scoreboards to ensure visibility.

Existing Features: Luxury boxes and other architectural features can affect the size of a scoreboard because it has to fit within available space

Budget

Size vs. Cost: Larger scoreboards are more expensive, as the cost per square foot for LED scoreboards ranges from about $200 to $1,200. There is a wide range in the quality you can find. For example, the Milwaukee Brewers’ scoreboard is 12,077 square feet, and it cost between $12 million and $14 million to build and install. This works out to approximately $995 to $1,159 per square foot.

Technology Costs: Higher-resolution LED panels are more expensive, so this would potentially reduce the overall size of the scoreboard on a tight budget.

Installation and Support Costs: The budget must account for installation and structural support, which can increase with the scoreboard size. Scoreboard installations can cost many thousands of dollars, and larger, more complex projects can run much higher than that.

Finding The Right Scoreboard Size For Your Needs

When discussing your scoreboard, we consider multiple factors, including:

  • Venue size and layout
  • Viewing distance for spectators
  • Type of sports or events hosted
  • Indoor vs outdoor installation
  • Budget constraints
  • Desired features (e.g., video capabilities, advertising space)
  • League or organization requirements
  • Technical requirements (power, connectivity, etc.)
  • Weather resistance (for outdoor scoreboards)
  • Brightness and visibility requirements
  • Customization options (colors, logos, etc.)
